Week 47: Psalms 133-135
Questions: Psalms 133-135
- Psalm 133 says, “How good it is when brothers dwell in unity…” How are you doing in this area? Is there anyone you need to make an effort with, to try and improve your relationship? God promises blessings for those who dwell in unity.
- Psalm 134 tells us to bless the Lord. How can you do that today? How can you bless others, too?
- David goes on in Psalm 135 to praise God for many specific things. What is your favorite way to praise Him? What are other ways you could learn to praise Him?
Devotion
Recently, I switched roles at my company, and now I work from home. As you might know, there are positives and negatives to this type of working environment. I must admit that it's quite nice to be able to attend a business meeting in shorts or not have to pack a lunch and rush out the door. However, if my internet goes down, I'm in trouble! Without it, my day will not go well.
A few weeks ago, I opened my computer to a message indicating: No Internet Service. A quick call to my internet provider determined that the issue was one of two things: it was either the signal coming from outside my house or it was due to the equipment providing the WiFi signal in my house. Thankfully, we were able to determine where the source of the problem was, and I was quickly back to work!
When we look at Psalms 133, 134, and 135 collectively, we can see that they really capture the two greatest commandments: to love God with all that we’ve got and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Psalm 133 begins with a stirring commentary on the beauty of Christians living in unity, describing it as “good and pleasant” (Psalm 133:1). God is blessed when we live in loving community with one another in healthy relationships, supporting and encouraging along the way. Psalms 134 and 135 focus on our duty and pleasure to praise the Lord, both in His church (Psalm 134:2) and whenever we reflect on His power and mercy (Psalm 135:3,8,13). When we’re loving God and loving people, we find ourselves in a good spiritual state where we can do impactful Kingdom work.
If we ever find ourselves feeling ineffective in our lives or sensing that we’re disconnected from the Lord, it is likely that one of those connections needs a reset. Do we need to assess our relationship with God? Do we need to reconnect with Him? Perhaps we’ve not read our Bible in a while, or we’ve missed church for a few weeks. If that connection seems good, maybe there’s a loved one or a co-worker relationship that needs your attention. With those two connections back online, you’ll be able to live in the joy, peace, and contentment the Lord promises us and be able to sincerely sing, “Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant.” (Psalm 135:3)
