Questions: Psalms 115-117

  • Psalm 115 - How do the themes of this Psalm–God’s glory, God’s faithfulness, God’s comfort, security that comes from God alone, and the emptiness of worldly pursuits–apply to your current circumstances?
  • Psalm 116 - Why do you love the Lord? How many reasons can you come up with in the next 5 minutes? Use Psalm 116 to add to your list.  How does this psalm redefine the concept of divine love for you?
  • Psalm 117 - What does this psalm teach us about the extent of God’s love and faithfulness?

Devotion

As I started reading Psalm 115 to write up some discussion questions, I was convicted that I needed to pray this psalm for myself to confess my own pride and desire for glory.

What a gift that we have in the psalms!!! God has given us beautiful words to voice our feelings through speaking these prayers back to Him. Here’s my adaptation of Psalm 115 that I am praying this morning:

I do not deserve any glory, but You, O Lord, You are worthy; to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! Please forgive the pride that has taken root in my heart and the ways that I have trusted in my own strength, and sought after recognition more than Your approval. Everything that I have comes from You. Please create in me a heart that is gentle, lowly, and dependent on You. Nothing compares to You. You are trustworthy. You help. You protect. You remember me and bless my family. Everything, all of creation, belongs to You and you have given us so much. Open my eyes and soften my heart that I might see Your blessings more clearly and worship You and Your name continuously more. Praise the Lord! Amen.
