Jesus confronts the hypocritical and useless religion of the Pharisees. In defending their tradition, they break God’s commandments. In being preoccupied with external religion and ritual purity, they miss the heart-level problem of sin. God does an inward work in the heart by applying Christ, in his death and resurrection, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and through faith.
